Abstract

1,121,061. Generators operating by electromagnetic interaction with fluids. CENTRAL ELECTRICITY GENERATING BOARD. 14 Sept., 1965 [30 Sept., 1964], No. 39859/64. HeadingH2A. The duct wall of a MHD generator comprises a plurality of cup-shaped metallic modules 4 which are assembled on to insulating bars 12, with insulating material between the modules, where the bars are shaped to provide a coolant channel along the inside of the surface contacting the hot working fluid in adjacent modules. Each module is of square or rectangular form and has slots cut in two opposite side walls into which the depending parts of bars 12 fit. Cruciform spacer pieces of insulating material are held by the recesses in the walls of the modules and are secured by plastic resin or other material which ensures that the duct wall is gas-tight. The insulating bars 12 have blocks 13 which depend into the module to provide a small section flow path across the face of the module thereby providing a high coolant velocity across this surface, elsewhere the channel is of large section to minimize the pressure drop. The bars 12 are secured together to provide a fluid-tight assembly and parts of some bars can be removed to provide headers 14 for the coolant. The coolant flow may be either transverse to the bars (as shown) or along the length of the bars. The block 13 may be replaced by a similarly -shaped block of conducting material so that an electrical connection can be made to a selected module. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,031,921.
