Abstract

1,121,057. Seaming non-metallic sheet material; cutting plastics with laser beams. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 4 May, 1967 [6 April, 1966], No. 15424/66. Headings B5A and B5K. [Also in Division H1] Plastics materials are cut and/or welded using a laser beam. In one application, aligned edges of plastics sheets are held together between metal jaws so that the edges to be joined protrude slightly and a laser beam is directed on to and run along these edges to form a molten seam which is then allowed to cool. Preferably, the beam is held stationary and the jaws are passed across the beam. The edges of the jaws may be rounded to form a trough or narrow channel therebetween or are shaped to form a cylindrical trough surrounding the edges to be welded to act as a mould to form a beaded seam. In another application, two sets of jaws positioned fairly close together grip a web of double plastics material. The laser beam traverses the material between the two sets of jaws to simultaneously out and weld the web. In a further application, to out a buttonhole in a plastics sheet, the laser beam is sharply focused and traversed over the sheet to make the slot and is then broadened to make the eye of the buttonhole. Alternatively, a buttonhole shaped stencil is interposed between the laser and the sheet.
