Abstract

112,080. Dawson, A. J., and Hillman Motor Car Co. April 4, 1917. Channels and reservoirs in engine crank casings. -In a motor-vehicle engine having splash lubrication, the crank case a has a false bottom b formed with a number of troughs c into which the connecting-rods dip. Perforations b' allow surplus oil to return to the bottom of the crank case. The ends of the false bottom are inclined at b<2> to retain the oil and prevent its escape at the main bearings a<1>, a<2> when the crank case is tilted. The troughs c are higher at the rear edges so that oil is retained in them when the vehicle is climbing a hill. A removable perforated pipe, through which the troughs are supplied by a pump, is passed through lugs a<2> in the crank case a, and the ends are closed by cap nuts, one of which is perforated at the side to register with a supply passage e drilled in the crank case.
