Abstract

1,120,796. Heat transfer decals. DIAMOND INTERNATIONAL CORP. 22 Nov., 1966 [7 April, 1966; 27 April, 1966], No. 52273/66. Heading B6C. A heat transfer decalcomania label comprises a temporary backing; a heat release layer; a primer and protective coating; a design print; and an over print adhesive layer disposed upon each other in the given order. The temporary backing or carrier is preferably a machineglazed Kraft paper. The heat release layer must be a wax-like material having a softening point of 80-120‹ C. and a penetration hardness of 1 to 10 which softens during heat transfer allowing the temporary backing to be separated from the rest of the label; a partially oxidized polyethylene wax which has a molecular weight between 1000 and 1800, a softening point between 80 and 120‹ C. a penetration hardness between 2À5 and 5À5 and acid number of 10-20 and a viscosity at 125‹ C. of 170-210 Centipoise, is suitable. Alternative heat release materials are only slightly oxidized polyethylene waxes having saponification numbers between 15 and 23; unoxidized hard waxes which are subjected to corona discharge after deposition; or ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers blended with paraffin wax. The primer coating is preferably a wax-free vinyl acrylic lacaner or varnish; the design print may be formed of up to 6 different coloured inks, generally nitrocellulose and chlorinated rubber resins; the adhesive layer is preferably a polyamide lacquer. On application to e.g. a plastic container, the adhesive bonds to the container, and the top layer of the label will be the residue of the heat release layer. The container may also be treated to render it print-receptive, by corona discharge or flame contacts.
