Abstract

Organic isocyanates are prepared by mixing in a first stage an excess of phosgene with a solution or suspension of a primary amine in an inert solvent while passing HCl in an amount not above 1 mole per mole NH2 group, and in a second stage or series of subsequent stages completing the reaction by heating, with optional addition of further phosgene. Examples describe the production of tolylene diisocyanate, but other isocyanates are listed.
