Abstract

112,039. British United Shoe Machinery Co., (United Shoe Machinery Co.). Dec. 18,1916. Screwing.-The work-feeding mechanism of a machine for inserting threaded wire in boots and shoes is automatically suspended when the wire-feed mechanism is rendered inoperative, and is started again upon the initial movement of the wire-feed mechanism to insert a fastener. The invention is described as applied to the wellknown rapid screwing machine described in Specifications 1492/93 and 8500/98, [both in Class 17, Boots &c.]. The wire is fed through the usual rotating spindle A, Fig. 1, by a sleeve surrounding the spindle and actuated from a wire-feed lever 28, which carries a cam roll 38 in engagement with a cam 40 on one of the continuously rotating lateral shafts described in the prior Specifications, while the work is fed by a toothed wheel 128 driven from a shaft 130, which is rotated by a pawl and ratchet 150, 151 and a loose pinion 132 gearing with teeth on one arm 134 of a double lever the other arm 138 of which is held by a spring plunger up to a roll 140 carried by a lever 142 also actuated from the cam 40. When, however, the wire feed is stopped a latch 152 is forced by a spring plunger 160 beneath a projection 156 on the hub of the double lever 134, 138 and prevents this lever from actuating the shaft 130. The latch 152 is formed with a tail-piece 158 adapted to be engaged by an adjustable stop 164 carried by an offset arm of the usual work-measuring rod 56, (which co-operates with the rod 52 to determine the length of wire fed as described in Specification 1492/93), so that during the downward movement of the rod 56 preliminary to the insertion of the first fastener, the stop 164 trips the latch and frees the work-feeding mechanism; the latch is held in its inoperative position by the engagement with its tail 158 of a hook member 166 pivoted on a yoke 80, which forms part of a wire-fed control mechanism of the character described in Specification 8500/98. In the present instance, this mechanism comprises a sliding block 60, Fig. 2, slotted for the passage of the rod 56 which carries an adjustable sleeve stop 63 adapted to pass through the slot but normally seated on a shelf at the rear end of the slot, the block 60 being held in this position by a spring plunger 68 bearing on a lug 70. The lug 70 is adapted to be engaged by a catch 98 on a lever 72, which is slotted at one end for the passage of a spring-encircled rod 78 bolted to the yoke 80 and is connected at its other end through a bell-crank 76 and link 100 to a lever 106 carrying a hardened-steel plate 110 adapted to be engaged by toes 112 on a wiresevering cam 114. The yoke 80 is connected by a rod 86 to a treadle lever which, when actuated, raises the yoke and positions the catch 98 in operative relation to the lug 70. When, therefore, the lever 106 is moved by the cam 114, the lever 72 slides the block 60 from under the stop 63, whereupon the wire-feed lever 28, Fig. 1, is moved by its controlling-spring in a direction for the cam roll 38 to be engaged by the cam 40, and for the stop 164 on the measuring-rod 56 to release the latch 152. During the time the yoke 80 is in operative position, the block 60, Fig. 2, is held against the action of its spring plunger 68 by a catch 118, but on the release of the treadle, the block is moved to position itself beneath the stop 63, and the latch 152, Fig. 1, snaps under the projection 156, thus suspending the feed of both the wire and the work. Specification 25991/11 also is referred to.
