Abstract

A noise loading test set for testing multichannel carrier telephone line equipment for non linear distortion performance operates by applying a white noise spectrum to the line, eliminating from this spectrum, using a band stop filter, a narrow band of frequencies to which the line receiver is tuned, and determining the noise introduced by the line into this frequency slot at the receiver. This is done by adjusting an attenuator to give the same receiver output as before the slot was introduced. This known system, however, introduces third order non linear noise and according to the invention this is reduced by introducing into the test set a compensating arrangement for the band stop filter which causes the transmitted power density in the vicinity of the stopped band to be relatively increased, so that the overall transmitted power remains the same. The compensating arrangement consists of a constant impedance filter in cascade with the band stop filter, which comprises either a series connected resonant circuit shunted by a resistance or a shunt connected anti-resonant circuit in series with a resistance.
