Abstract

1,120,325. Burners H. E. FLETCHER CO. 11 Nov., 1965, No. 47983/65. Heading F4T. [Also in Division Fl] A combustion apparatus for producing a nitrogen cooled flame jet, e.g. for rock boring, comprises, Fig. 1, a mixing chamber 2 to which is supplied kerosene fuel through pipe 6, and oxygen and nitrogen through pipes 10, 12, respectively, at such temperature that the fuel is dispersed into droplets without vaporizing. The fuel mixture passes through an aperture A in a wall 7 defining the end of the mixing chamber 2 and expands to a reduced velocity in the combustion chamber 16. The ratio of the reactants supplied to the mixing chamber 2 and the size of the apparatus are such that a proportion of the burning gases in the combustion chamber 16 recirculates to form a toroidal mass of flame T adjacent the wall 7 which ignites the incoming mixture from aperture A. The mixture velocity through aperture A is greater than the velocity of flame propagation to avoid flash-back into the mixing chamber 2, whereas the reduced velocity in the combustion chamber is lower than the flame propagation velocity. The burning gases leave the combustion chamber through an outlet 20 as a jet of flame. The apparatus is said to produce a cooler flame by the presence of the nitrogen and to operate with stable combustion over a wider range of reactant ratios. In a modification, Fig. 4, the oxygen and nitrogen are supplied to the mixing chamber in the form of compressed air rather than as separate components. In this embodiment the air passes through holes 54 in a chamber 55 to mix with liquid fuel from a nozzle 50 before entering the combustion chamber 68. Additional oxygen is supplied through a pipe 56 and passage 57 and cooling is effected by a water jacket 61 having an inlet and outlet 62, 63 respectively. In a further modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the combustion chamber is cooled by compressed air which is eventually discharged through passages (340, 348) in the region of the flame jet.
