Abstract

1,119,857. Separating liquid particles from gases; condenser systems. DRESSER INDUSTRIES Inc. 11 Oct., 1965, No. 43132/65. Headings B1B and BIT. [Also in Divisions F1 and F4] Entrained liquid particles are removed from a gas stream as it passes between an array of vanes 49 having hollow interiors to which liquid is swept through openings 65 in the concave upper walls 50 of the vanes, the openings 65 being shielded by "drip strips" inside the vanes and downstream of the openings. Vanes 49 comprise upper and lower curved walls 50, 52 and leading impingement plates 54. Openings 65 are elongated lengthwise of the vanes, in two staggered rows (Fig. 7, not shown), and a continuous opening 63 is formed between wall 50 and upturned edge 64 of wall 52 at the downstream end of the vane. Walls 50, 52 extend through openings (68) in supporting end walls (38, 39), whereby liquid drains from the vane interiors, and T- shaped members 76 form gutters opening into openings 63 at the ends of various adjacent walls (38, 39) to drain off liquid from walls (38, 39) which has been captured by and run along lips 58 of vane impingement plates 54. The vane assembly is mounted in an extension of a frame which supports tubes (31) of a water cooled condenser (Figs. 1-3, not shown). Vane-condenser combinations are slidable on rails (34) into a housing (11) on which an air compressor (10) is mounted, on removing a cover 17. The housing is divided so that vane-condenser combinations are located between successive stages of the compressor, for cooling and drying the air being compressed. Plates 54 and the vanes generally are inclined at 30 degrees to opposite sides of the incoming gas stream. The vanes slope longitudinally at 5 degrees to horizontal and each subtends an angle of 90 degrees.
