[Also in Divisions B3 and F4] Two reactant fluids supplied to channels 254, 258 respectively pass through porous sheets 252, 260 into the reaction interspace between the composite sheet units 255, 256. The heat of reaction is removed by coolant flowing in channel 251 of imperforate sheet 250. Coolant channels may also be provided in sheet unit 256. The rate of flow of reactants through the porous layers may be controlled by valves and by adjusting the distance between the sheet units by mechanical or hydraulic means, thereby to control the back pressure.
