A hand circular saw comprises an electric motor 1 in a motor housing 9, a saw blade spindle 8 for carrying a saw blade 2 which is retractable into a saw housing 3 connected to a base-plate 4, and a gap wedge 27 rigidly secured to the motor housing 9, the motor housing together with the saw blade spindle and gap wedge being articulatedly connected through a parallelogram linkage having two levers 14, 15 with the saw housing and base-plate for variation of the cutting depth. The saw housing is connected by pivots 5 to the base-plate, and the levers 14, 15 are connected by pivots 12, 13 to the motor housing and lever 14 is connected by a pivot 16 to the saw housing while lever 15 is connected by a pivot 17 to a holder 20 having a screw-and-nut connection 21, 24 with a slotted attachment 23 on the baseplate whereby the saw housing can be secured in angular relationship to the base plate. A bracket 26 is secured to the motor housing and carries the gap wedge 27 which, during pivotal movement of the motor housing and saw blade always remains a distance a above the lowest point of the saw blade, a slot 7 providing clearance for the saw blade spindle. The motor housing can be retained in an upper rest position by a lever 34 which is urged by a spring 35 about a pivot 33 on the motor housing and engages a dog 36 on the saw housing. The lever is movable about the pivot to release the motor housing by depression of a knob 32 connected to the lever 34 by members 40, 41 and balls 42 disposed in a tube 43. The depth of cut can be determined by a roller 44 on an arm 6 secured to the motor housing engaging an adjustable stop 45.
