Abstract

1,119,243. Food containers; stoppers &c. MICROTHERM Ltd. 5 Jan., 1966 [5 Jan., 1965; 26 Oct., 1965], Nos. 392/65 and 45279/65. Headings B8D and B8T. An article of food is tightly enclosed within a container comprising two cylindrical tubes placed end to end and connected by a frangible section. In the form shown a sausage roll 4, 5 is contained within a cardboard tube 1 having a broken or weakened region A, and wrapped in an outer sheet 6 of thin plastics or paper providing impermeability and rigidity to the package. Alternatively the sheet 6 may comprise two layers of different flexible material, one providing impermeability and one providing rigidity. A tear thread 7 wound around the tube 1 beneath the sheet 6 facilitates opening of the container, a groove 8 being provided in the tube 1 to support the thread. The tube 1 may be spirally wound. The ends of the package are closed by plastics stoppers 2 fitted frictionally within the tube 1, and having lips 3 to engage with the end of the tube. In a further embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the base portion (10) of the stopper is bowed inwardly, so that if pressure is built up within the container, such as during heating, the base (10) tends to be flattened, expanding the side wall (11) into tight engagement with the inner surface of the tube (1). The stopper (2) may be adapted to carry condiments. The package is suitable for heating in a cylindrical micro-wave oven, in which case the stopper &c. may be dimensioned so as to protect the condiment from the heating effect. The container may in this case be entirely formed of low loss dielectric materials.
