Abstract

1,119,182. Continuous casting-machines. ASHMORE, BENSON, PEASE & CO. Ltd. 1 April, 1966 [1 April, 1965], No. 13886/65. Heading B3F. A starting bar for a continuous casting plant includes a portion 11 wound as a helix in which each wrap of the helix is in prestressed abutting relationship with adjacent wraps. The crosssection may be circular or rectangular at the helically wound portion. The starting bar may comprise a plurality of said helically wound portions coupled together by a universal, or alternatively, an inflexible coupling. The universal coupling may be a ball-joint device comprising a ball 14 retained in a spherical seating 13 by an annular member 17 and a circlip 18. The alternative coupling comprises a grooved spigot (21), (Fig. 3, not shown), located in a cylindrical hole and retained therein by bolts (23) extending into the groove and locking the two parts of the coupling against relative movement.
