Abstract
1,119,158. Vascular spring guide for catheters. UNITED STATES CATHETER & INSTRUMENT CORP. 5 Dec., 1966 [7 Dec., 1965; 29 June, 1966], No. 54320/66. Heading A5R. [Also in Division F2] A spring guide for use in internal vascular manipulations generally together with catheters is formed from a coiled wire having, when straight, at least one curvable portion wherein adjacent coils are contiguous to each other along one side of the coiled wire and spaced from each other along the opposite side thereof, e.g. as shown in Fig. 1. A core wire 13 is generally either permanently or releasably secured at the distal tip of the spring guide, the core wire tip 19 being provided with a cap 16. A handle (not shown) may be provided where the core wire 13 emerges from the proximal end of the spring guide. The spring guides may be incorporated in catheters to mechanically distend a portion thereof. As shown in Fig. 12 (not shown) a catheter (24) having four slots (25) symmetrically arranged around its periphery and covered by an inflatable latex sleeve (26) contains four spring guides, the curvable portions of which are disposed in radial alignment with the slots. In use, distension of the sleeve occurs when tension is applied to the core wires of the guides.
