Abstract
The invention comprises l-1-(41-nitrophenyl) -2-isopropylamino-ethanol; pharmaceutically acceptable acid additon salts thereof; and a process for their preparation comprising optically resolving a racemic mixture of dl-1-(41 - nitrophenyl) - 2 - isopropylamino - ethanol using an optically active acid to obtain the desired l-isomer and, if desired, reacting the l-isomer with an appropriate inorganic or organic acid. The resolution may be performed by reacting the racemic mixture with the optically active acid, e.g. D( - )-dibenzoyl-tartaric acid, D( + )-tartaric acid, L( + )-glutamic acid or ( + )-camphorsulphonic acid, and thereafter separating the diastereoisomers by fractional crystallization. Pharmaceutical compositions-having hypotensive and spasmolytic activity, for oral, parenteral or rectal administration, comprise a compound of the invention together with a pharmaceutical carrier. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 950,682.
