Abstract

Glass articles are strengthened by contacting them at a temperature of at least 75 DEG C. below annealing temperature, e.g. at 400-450 DEG C., with a molten mass containing potassium ions, the glass having one of the following percentage compositions by weight, modified, if desired, by the replacement of up to 5 mol. per cent of MgO by an equimolecular amount of Al2O3, viz.: (a) SiO2 70-81, MgO 7.5-12, Na2O 11.5-18.5, the ratio Na2O : MgO being 1.18-1.84; (b) SiO2 61-67, MgO 12-17, Na2O 19-25. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 917,388.
