A public telephone call box has electricallycontrolled locks for the entrance door and a security box, housing the telephone and a coin receptacle, interconnected by a control circuit which ensures that the security box cannot be opened until the door lock has been engaged and that the door lock cannot be re-opened until the lock of the security box has been closed and if an attempt is made to damage the equipment in the security box, a tremblertype switch opens the door lock circuit and so prevents the door from being opened. At the same time an alarm bell can be energised and an alarm given at the exchange. A pushbutton switch enables an alarm to be given in event of failure of the door lock. A maignet may be provided to hold the lid of the security box in the open position.
