Abstract
1,118,840. Deaerating fruits and vegetables. ELLETT COPPER & BRASS CO. Ltd. 30 Dec., 1966, No. 58314/66. Heading A2D. An apparatus for continuously deaerating sliced fruit or vegetable (e.g. apples) comprises deaerating means 10 comprising vessel 18 maintained under vacuum by a vacuum source connected to connection 74, and containing an open ended, cylindrical basket 22 divided into segments 38 to 41 by apertured partitions 34-37, and means for intermittently rotating the basket 22. The vessel 18 has an inlet 80 and an outlet opening leading to shoot 55 and pipe 19 the bottom of which pipe is maintained under water in tank 20. The rotating means may comprise a pawl ratchet mechanism actuated by a fluid actuated piston and operating on a central shaft 25 in the basket 22. The bottom of basket 22 has a flexible flap or apron which sealing engages the bottom of vessel 18. The apparatus may include dewatering means to remove most of the water from a mixture of sliced product and water before the product enters the deaerating vessel, the removed water being directed into outlet pipe 19. In use, the product in admixture with water is continuously fed from tank 11 by pump 15 via pipe 16 into a segment of the basket which is in the filling position and continually unloaded from a segment in the unloading position via shoot 55 to pipe 19 and conveyer 87.
