Abstract
1,118,768. Refrigerating. R. V. ANDERSON. 7 Oct., 1965, No. 42696/65. Heading F4H. In a refrigerating system comprising a compressor 10 and condenser 12, liquid refrigerant from the condenser is cooled in a heat exchanger 32, passes through a flow restrictor 22 and is then divided into two streams, one of which passes through line 24 to an evaporator 14 and the other of which passes through a by-pass line 30 via the heat exchanger 32 where it evaporates to cool the liquid refrigerant flowing to restrictor 22. Superheated vapour from line 30 is returned to the suction line 16 where it evaporates any liquid leaving evaporator 14 and a valve 36 for regulating the relative proportions of the two streams is provided in line 16 upstream of its connection with line 30. Valve 36 may be adjusted automatically in response to the temperature of the medium being cooled by evaporator 14 and may be located in line 24 downstream of its connection with line 30. Restrictor 22 may be a capillary, fixed orifice or, as shown, a thermostatic expansion valve having its sensing bulb 26 mounted on line 16 downstream of line 30. Water condensed on evaporator 14 is collected in a sump 34 and used to cool exchanger 32. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 (not shown), the heat exchanger (32<SP>1</SP>) comprises a tube (21) through which liquid refrigerant from the condenser is supplied to a chamber (23) and about which is coiled part (31) of the by-pass line (30<SP>1</SP>).
