Abstract

1,118,053. Hydrostatic transmissions. SUNDSTRAND CORP. 23 June, 1965 [2 July, 1964; 4 June, 1965], No. 26687/65. Headings F2C and F2D. [Also in Division F1] In a hydrostatic transmission comprising an axial piston pump and a motor 69, the pump cam plate 63 is adjustable on both sides of the neutral position by a handle 84 and the cam plate is movable in a stroke decreasing direction against the bias of a torsion spring 88 when the pump outlet pressure exceeds a predetermined maximum value at a particular pump speed. The cam plate 63 is subjected to a net stroke decreasing piston moment due to the fluid pressure acting on the pistons 62 and the inertia of the pistons and this is just balanced by the spring 88 at the maximum desired outlet pressure in all adjustment positions of the handle 84. A spool valve 75 controls the flow of excess liquid through an outlet 76 supplied to the transmission circuit by a make-up pump formed by grooves 66 in the pump cylinder block 61 and valve plate 65. In a further embodiment, Figs. 6 to 8 (not shown), an axial piston pump 310 is in closed circuit with a geartype motor 311, a gear pump 374 supplying make-up liquid to the circuit. Excess make-up liquid flows via a relief valve 396, the pump housing 312 and a filter 302 to a make-up liquid reservoir 382. The pump cam plate 346 is angularly adjustable on both sides of neutral by a handle 350 and a torsion spring holds an arm, fixed to the cam plate, in alignment with the handle against the net piston moment exerted thereon. To provide for free wheeling of a vehicle fitted with the transmission a needle valve 460 is provided to connect the inlet and outlet lines 461, 462 of the pump.
