Abstract

Novel aziridinyl ethers of the general formula <FORM:1117780/C2/1> where n is from 0 to 4 and R is a divalent radical formed by the removal of two hydroxyl groups from a bisphenol or from an adduct of bisphenol A and propylene oxide, in which latter case R is the radical of formula <FORM:1117780/C2/2> where x is an integer from 1 to 10, are prepared by reacting an appropriate aziridine compound with an appropriate diglycidyl ether or with the corresponding halohydrin ether. The reaction is carried out at a temperature from 50 DEG to 100 DEG C. and at least two mole proportions of aziridine are used per mole proportion of ether. An acid acceptor is preferably present. The novel compounds may also be prepared by reacting aziridine with epichlorohydrin and reacting the resulting aziridinyl chlorohydrin with the diol HOROH, in the presence of alkali. The compounds are useful as bactericides and disinfectants, catalysts and curing agents for polyurethane and epoxy resins, and may themselves be homopolymerized or copolymerized with other aziridinyl compounds to make solid resins.
