Abstract

Novel compositions of sulphur and polymeric polysulphides of formula (SnRSm)x wherein R is an alkyl substituted or unsubstituted methylene or phenylene group, n and m are integers of at least 1, and x is an integer of at least 2, are prepared by heating a mixture of the above chemicals, preferably at 160 DEG C. Compositions with a major amount of sulphur, e.g. from 50 to 95% and in which the sum of n and m is equal to 4 are preferred. The reactions of 2,2-dichloropropane with sodium tetrasulphide in aqueous methanol to yield poly - (dimethylmethylenetetrasulphide) (Ex. II) and of toluene-3,4-dithiol and sulphur monochloride in cyclohexane to yield poly-(4 - methyl - 1,2 - phenylenetetrasulphide) (Ex. III) are described. Compositions of the polymers of Exs. (II) and (III) and of poly-(methylenetetrasulphide) (Ex. I) with sulphur are described, and also comparative stability tests with compositions of polyethylenetetra-sulphide with sulphur are given. The compositions are useful as road-marking paints, adhesive compositions and cement-like materials.ALSO:Compositions comprise the product of heating sulphur and a polymeric polysulphide of formula (SnRSm)x, where R is an unsubstituted or alkyl-substituted methylene or phenylene group, n and m are integers of at least 1 and x is an integer of at least 2. Compositions with a major amount of sulphur and in which n and m are 4 are preferred. In the examples, compositions of sulphur and poly (dimethylmethylene tetrasulphide), poly (4-methyl-1,2-phenylene tetrasulphide), and poly (methylene tetrasulphide) are described. The compositions may contain up to 99% sulphur.
