Abstract

1,117,480. Films and fibres of incompatible polymers. W. R. GRACE & GO; 12 Aug., 1965 [14 Aug., 1964], No. 34636/65. Heading B5B. A striated film is obtained by melt extrusion of. a mixture of incompatible thermoplastic polymers (defined as those which do not form homogeneous blends when intimately mixed above the melting point). This may be followed by uniaxial or biaxial stretching of the film by 100 to to 900%; the film may then be mechanically worked or subjected to acoustic energy, possibly in the presence of a non-solvent to break it up into its component fibres. In examples mixtures of polystyrene and polyethylene or polypropylene are extruded and chilled under various specified conditions to give striated films, some of which are uniaxially stretched, cut into pieces and mechanically worked in water in a blender to produce short fibres. The separation into fibres may be incomplete, a network of fibres then being obtained.
