Abstract
1,117,314. Eddy-current clutches. MAWDSLEY'S Ltd. 6 Dec., 1965 [19 Oct., 1964], No. 51541/65. Heading H2A. In an eddy current clutch having a central field structure surrounded by relatively rotatable members, an air passage is provided through the field structure so that cooling air A passes axially through the field structure in one direction then radially outwardly and thereafter axially in the opposite direction between the two rotatable members. As described an interdigitated pole member 12 is carried by the inner shaft 10 of a concentric drive, the outer shaft 9 supporting an inductor drum 8. A main flow of cooling air B is created by impeller blades 22 which may be extended in the direction of the broken line so as to prevent laminar flow. The auxiliary flow A is induced by impeller blades 17. The outer shaft 9 may carry the rotor of a motor 24 or may drive a pulley.
