Abstract

A cleaning towel comprises an absorbent web, e.g. paper, coated with a composition for cleaning including a binder, a porous cleaning powder and a carrier powder. The cleaning powder comprises any of the following materials-diatomaceous earths, pumices, sand, insoluble phosphates and carbonates, ground glass, garnet, emery, silicon dioxide and tripoli powders and the carrier powder comprises feldspars such as nepheline syenite or feldspathoids. At least 40% of the carrier and cleaning powders in the composition are of particle size between 10 and 40 microns are preferably the carrier and cleaning powders are present in the cleaning composition in a ratio by weight between 6:1 and 1:1. The binder which adheres the carrier and cleaning powders to the web may be of proteins, starches, natural or synthetic gums, cellulose, rubber latexes, vinyl acetate latexes or acrylic polymer latexes. The cleaning composition may be additionally provided with a plasticizer to facilitate application of the composition to the web, a surfactant such as sodium lauryl sulphate which aids the absorption of water and dirt by the cleaning towel, a thickener such as hydroxyethyl cellulose and a dispersant such as tetrasodium pyrophosphate which ensure a uniform coating of composition on the web in the manufacture of a cleaning towel and also colourants and odourants which enhance the commercial attractiveness of the towel. Methods of preparing the cleaning composition in the form of a slurry and coating it on to a web of semi creped paper to form a cleaning towel are described.
