Abstract

Ethers of polymeric polyhydroxy compounds are prepared by reacting the polyhydroxy compound, while dissolved in dimethyl sulphoxide, with a metal alcoholate to form a metal compound of the polyhydroxy compound and subsequently reacting the metal compound with an alkyl or aralkyl halide or an alkenyl or aralkenyl halide. In examples, polyvinyl alcohol is treated with sodium ethylate and the sodium compound so prepared is reacted with (1) ethyl iodide, (2) allyl bromide, and (3) cinnamyl bromide.
