Abstract
1,116,932. Radiant heaters. UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. 8 Oct., 1965 [19, Oct., 1964], No. 42724/65. Heading F4T. An infra-red radiant heater comprises a housing 1 having a first-stage combustion element comprising mesh screen 4, reflector screens 6 and burner screen 5, and a second-stage combustion element spaced from the first by a member 7 and comprising a catalytically coated burner screen 11 and a guard screen 12. The catalytic coating may comprise platinum either alone or in combination with thorium, tungsten, cesium, palladium, ruthenium, iridium or rhodium. The screens are of chromium-nickel alloy and the mesh screen 4 and guard screen 12 have a wider mesh than the other screens. Screens 4, 5 and 6 are retained between the spacer member 7 and an outwardly projecting flange 8 of the housing 1 by bolts 9 and are heat insulated by asbestos members 10. The screens 11 and 12 are retained between spacer 7 and a cover ring 13 by the bolts 9. Primary combustion of the fuel/air mixture takes place at the downstream face of the burner screen 5 which is heated to provide infra-red radiant heat. The combustion gases then pass through the burner screen 11 where catalytic oxidation of the unburnt fuel/air mixture and carbon monoxide takes place and secondary combustion heats screen 11 providing more infra-red radiation. Ignition holes may be provided in the screen 11 or spacer 7. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2, primary combustion of the fuel/air mixture takes place at the exterior surface of cylindrically formed screen members 19 and 20 held between end closure members 16 and 22. Secondary combustion takes place at the exterior surface of an outer cylindrical catalytically coated oxidizing screen 25 spaced from but co-axially with screens 19 and 20 and held between closure member 16 and an extension 23 of closure member 22. Closure member 16 is formed with a fuel/air inlet 17 which opens into the interior of screens 19 and 20.
