Abstract

1,116,181. Perforated thermoplastic sheets. BAKELITE XYLONITE Ltd. 31 March, 1966 [1 Jan., 1965], No. 110/65. Headings B5A and B5B. A lattice of thermoplastic material, e.g. high or low density polyethylene, acrylonitrile/ butadiene/styrene copolymer, polypropylene, ethylene/polyvinyl acetate copolymer, polyvinyl chloride, nylon, polystyrene (which may be high impact) and polyethylene terephthalate, is produced by contacting softened thermoplastic material with a rotatory roller having a pattern embossed or engraved therein to produce a thermoplastic sheet or film having a plurality of zones of reduced thickness which are converted into holes upon subsequent heating of the sheet or film. The feed to the roller preferably comprises calendered or extruded sheet continuously fed directly or indirectly, or as a batch feed, and the zones of reduced thickness may be produced using a nip of a pair of chromium plated or stainless steel rollers of which at least one is engraved or embossed with the desired pattern or each of which is provided with a different part of the pattern, e.g. each with a series of grooves intersecting the other at right angles, and a smooth roller may be of steel or rubber; alternatively a patterned roller may co-operate to define a nip with a doctor knife. The heating step comprises a hot air blast or a coal gas/air flame providing a flame temperature of 1000‹ C. which is applied for 0À5 to 2À0 sees and the holes are formed by the zones of reduced thickness retracting upon release of strain. The lattice may be stretched before, during or after the heating operation which stretching may be in two directions at right angles applied simultaneously or sequentially using stretching ratios of 2 : 1 to 10 : 1 whereby netting is produced; a region of uniform thickness preferably being provided adjacent the edges of the patterned sheet to facilitate the grip of a stretching device. The lattices produced are suitable for forming netting for gas and liquid filters, upholstery material and grilles and sieves. The netting is suitable for agricultural and surgical applications and for laminating with other materials and as heat shrinkable netting. Patterns of square, round and diamond shape may be produced together with floral patterns.
