Abstract

An artificial leather comprises a base material coated or impregnated with an amino acid polymer. The base can be of: natural fibres, e.g. cotton, cellulose, wool; synthetic fibres such as polyamide, polyester, polyacrylic, polyvinyl, polyvinyl alcohol, polyolefin fibres; inorganic fibres such as glass fibre; mixtures thereof. The fibrous base may be woven or unwoven, or paper. The base may also be a sheet of a resin e.g. polyvinyl chloride, or rubber, or of nylon fibre coated with polyvinyl chloride. The polymers are formed from neutral or acidic amino acids, and lower aliphatic esters thereof, e.g. lower alkyl esters, aromatic esters of acidic amino acids, basic amino acids and acyl derivatives thereof. Examples of neutral amino acids are: glycine, alanine, valine, leucine, isoleucine, phenylalanine, tyrosine, proline, hydroproline, serine, threonine, cysteine, cystine, methionine, tryptophan; of acidic amino acids: aspartic acid, glutamic acid; of basic amino acids: orginine, lysine and histidine. The polymer may be applied as a solution to the base material, and solvent evaporated therefrom. Adhesives may be used to cause the polymer to adhere to the base material. The amino acid may be polymerised after the monomer or low polymer is applied. In example 4, a film of aspartic acid methyl ester polymer is bonded to a leather substitute comprising a nylon fibre coated with polyvinyl chloride using polyvinyl chloride paste; in example 5 the film is compressed on to a sheet of polyvinyl chloride.ALSO:An artificial leather comprises a base material coated or impregnated with an amino acid polymer.
