Abstract

Polymeric materials, e.g. polyesters (Example 7) are optically brightened with compounds of formula <FORM:1115235/C3/1> wherein A1 and A2, which may contain nonchromophoric monovalent substituents, are Ph, 2-benzoxazolyl or 1,3,4-oxdiazolyl, B is phenylene, furoylene or thienylene, and m, n are 1 or 2.ALSO:Optical brightening agents have the formula <FORM:1115235/C4-C5/1> wherein A1 and A2, which may contain non-chromophoric monovalent substituents, are Ph, 2-benzoxazolyl or 1,3,4-oxdiazolyl, B is phenylene, furoylene or thienylene, and m, n are 1 or 2.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:1115235/C2/1> wherein A1 and A2, which may contain non-chromophoric monovalent substituents, are Ph, 2-benzoxazolyl or 1,3,4-oxdiazolyl, B is phenylene, furoylene or thienylene, and m, n are 1 or 2. These compounds are prepared by treatment with SOCl2 at an elevated temperature, of precursors containing a -CONHNH-CO- group corresponding to either (a) the oxdiazole ring outside the square brackets or (b) each oxdiazole ring in the desired product. The required starting materials are made by reacting the appropriate carboxylic acid halide with hydrazine or with the corresponding acylhydrazide.ALSO:Fibrous materials are optically brightened by treatment with an aq. suspension or solution of a compound of formula <FORM:1115235/D1-D2/1> wherein A1 and A2, which may contain non-chromophoric monovalent substituents, are Ph, 2 - benzoxazolyl or 1, 3, 4 - oxdiazolyl, B is phenylene, furolene or thienylene, and m, n are 1 or 2. Anionic, cationic or non-ionic surface-active agents may be present. The fibrous materials may be endless filaments, staple fibres, flocks, ropes, textile fibres, yarns, threads, fleeces, felts, cotton wool, flocked articles, woven, bonded or knitted textiles, papers, cardboards or paper compositions.
