Abstract
A process for the production of spherical glass particles having an improved crush strength comprises quenching heated pre-formed spherical glass particles by immersing them in an aqueous solution of an ethylene oxide polymer. The spherical glass particles may be made by moving a bed of glass particles mixed with finely divided carbon (e.g. acetylene black) through a heating zone, or by the known methods of aspirating or blowing a spray from a molten pool of glass. The spheres are formed at a temperature of about 900 DEG C. and preferably enter the quenching liquid at a temperature not less than 650 DEG C. They may, therefore, be allowed to fall through air for such a distance that they are cooled to not less than 650 DEG C. A number of different compositions of the quench bath are given. The glass used may be a soda-lime-silica, lead or borosilicate glass.
