Abstract
A preformed, isolated, impure alkoxy silane is purified to an essentially zero acid content (less than 5 parts of acid, calculated as HCl, per million parts of alkoxysilane) by distillation from admixture with a reagent which will convert acidic or potentially acidic species present in the impure alkoxysilane to non-acidic non-volatile compounds. Alkoxy silanes used in the examples are methylmethoxysilane, methyltrimethoxysilane, dimethyldimethoxysilane and phenyltriethoxysilane. The reagent is preferably used in amount from 0.001 to 5% by weight of the alkoxysilane. Suitable reagents are: alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxides, alkali metal salts of organic acids and weak inorganic acids (e.g. carbonates), alkali metal alkoxides and metal hydrides, e.g. lithium aluminium hydride. In the examples are used LiAlH4, Na2CO3, NaOH, NaOC2H5 and NaOCH3.
