Abstract
1,114,979. Pumps operating by electromagnetic interaction with fluids. G. N. J. MEAD; 5 Feb., 1966, No. 5139/66. Addition to 1,052,098. Heading H2A. The apparatus comprises an electrically insulating conduit for the conducting fluid medium e.g. molten metal, a plurality of outer electromagnets mounted end-to-end along the conduit with adjacent electromagnets in polar opposition, a conductor disposed inwardly of the conduit walls, a pair of electrically-insulating baffles spaced from one another and extending in separate spiral paths between the conductor and the inner wall of the conduit to define two separate spiral passages, and means for applying D.C. inwardly through one spiral passage in one portion of the conduit and outwardly through the other spiral passage in an axiallyadjacent portion of the conduit and forming thereby fluid electromagnets of opposing polar relation which coact with the outer electromagnets to pump the medium axially along the conduit. In Fig. 1, D.C. is supplied by two strip electrodes of opposite polarity mounted on the conduit wall, one at the outer end of each spiral passage. Each electrode 20 or 22, has sections alternately exposed 24, and insulated, 26, these sections being staggered with respect to one another. The outer electromagnets are formed by a single continuous coil, adjacent sections of which are oppositely wound, each such section " bridging " the region where two portions of the conduit, forming two fluid electromagnets, adjoin. In Fig. 6 (not shown), the central conductor is formed from iron or the like and is wound to form electromagnets in the same way as the conduit. In Fig. 9, the inner winding of Fig. 6 is replaced by a set of interleaved spiral baffles 36 and 38 mounted between the central conductor 18 and a concentric tubular conduit 40 40 spaced from and extending coaxially with the outer conduit 12; the direction of the spirals is, however, reversed, and the fluid electromagnets in the inner annulus have their poles in alignment with those of the outer electromagnets 28, all so that the " inner " fluid is pumped in the direction axially opposite to that of the " outer " fluid. Fig. 14 depicts an improvement of the Fig. 6 embodiment consisting in imbedding in each spiral baffle conductive strips 66 and 68 and, between these at each location, ferro-magnetic strips 65, all in axially-spaced groups; these groups are located where opposed poles 58, 60 are provided on the conduit 50 and the central conductor 56 respectively.
