Abstract

111,489. Pfleumer, F. Oct. 28, 1916, [Convention date]. Thermo-electric batteries.-A couple consisting of a vaporizable element of high atomic volume and a difficultly fusible element of low atomic volume is arranged so that heat is supplied directly only to the latter element. An electromotive force as high as 1 volt per couple may thus be obtained. The vaporizable element may be lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, or caesium, and the other element may be amorphous or metallic carbon, graphite, aluminium, silicon, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, palladium, silver, tantalum, tungsten, osmium, platinum, iridium, or gold. Space must be provided for evaporation and condensation of the alkali metal, in order to cause a difference of temperature between the elements, and loss by vaporation and oxidation is prevented by a gastight enclosure, preferably exhausted. In one construction, an iron, steel, or nickel tube 3, Fig. 3, heated internally, and an outer tube 5, cooled by gills 6 or by liquid, are spaced by mica, porcelain, or other washers 11 separated by bodies of packing. Glands 13 compress the washers and packing against collars 10 on the inner tube. In the chamber between the tubes is contained the alkali metal. Another construction, Fig. 4, provides for a column of the liquid element above the whole of the heated surface. so that vapour is generated under uniform pressure and condenses in the liquid. The refractory member is in the form of a disk 8 closing the lower end of a tube 5 from which it is insulated by a mica or like washer 19. Another washer 20 insulates the tube from an outer casing 16, 17 serving to confine the heat. The tube is in permanent connexion with a vacuum pump. A screen 18 around the tube produces a draught of air for cooling. The source of heat may be fuel, hot liquid, steam, or exhaust gases of internal-combustion engines.
