Abstract

1,114,648. Pulse generators. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. 11 Nov., 1966 [17 Dec., 1965], No. 50634/66. Heading H3T. [Also in Divisions G4 and H2] A pulse generator for an ultrasonic vibrating transducer 2 comprises a power thyristor 4 driven by an auxiliary thyristor 26 which is shunted across the anode-gate electrodes of the power transistor 4; this, together with an impedance 34 from gate to cathode, turns off the firing pulse rapidly and prevents excessive heat dissipation in the gate-cathode path of the power thyristor. When the supply is connected, capacitor 8 charges up through a constantcurrent choke 6, and the transducer 2, and at a certain point the capacitor voltage is sufficient to fire the auxiliary thyristor 26 through resistor 16 and diode 22. This turns on the power thyristor 4 and capacitor 8 discharges through it and inductor 10. The components 8 and 10 form a resonant circuit and capacitor 8 then charges in a reverse direction cutting off the power thyristor 4. The capacitor 8 now discharges in the reverse direction through the load 2 and the cycle recommences. Capacitor 14 affects the phase of the oscillating voltage and stabilizes the frequency. The firing point of the auxiliary thyristor 26 is controlled by two feedback paths: (a) from the anode of thyristor 4 through resistor 12; and (b) from capacitor 14 through an integrating circuit 16, 18, capacitor 20 improving the rise time of the integrated signal. The operating frequency depends on the ratio of these feedback signals. Diode 22 protects the thyristor 26 from high negative voltages when the capacitor 8 is reverse charged, and diodes 30, 32 short-circuit the gate electrodes of the thyristors for the same reason.
