Abstract

1,114,415. Grinding, stropping, honing, polishing. WILKINSON SWORD Ltd. 23 June, 1965 [27 June, 1964], No. 26687/64. Heading B3D. A method of effecting an abrasive process, e.g. grinding, stropping, honing or polishing, in which an abrasive member is applied to the material being processed with a force of predetermined value includes the steps of (a) continually monitoring the presence of the material to be processed by sensing a partial vacuum maintained by the material, the partial vacuum being broken when the material is absent, and (b) applying a counterforce to the abrasive member in response to breaking of the vacuum, the value of the counterforce being greater than the predetermined value. Razor blade strip conveyed by a pegged band through a guide 16, is stropped by stropping discs 10, 10 carried by a pair of double arms 11, 11 pivoted at 12 on a part 13 mounted on a slide 14 adjustable towards and away from the guide 16 by a control knob 15. The arms 11, 11 carry counterbalance weights 20, 20. The discs 10, 10 may be driven from one or more motors mounted on the machine base and driving through a layshaft coaxial with the pivot 12 and belt or chain drives. For other operations on the strip grinding or honing wheels or polishing pads are used instead of the discs 10 10. One double arm 11, 11 is loaded by a pneumatic cylinder 22, supplied from a reservoir 23 through a regulator 24; a gauge 25 is provided. The arms are damped by an hydraulic, pneumatic or eddy-current damper 26. The other double arm is similarly but oppositely loaded. Partial vacuum may be used instead of pressure. Contact of the discs with the guide when no strip is present is prevented by a pneumatic cylinder 27 supplied from the reservoir 23 through a regulator 29. When strip is present it closes a hole 31 so that a vacuum pump 32 reduces the pressure on one side of a diaphragm valve 30 to cut off the air supply to the cylinder 27. The controlled loading and the counterforce may be produced by other means than penumatic, e.g. by dead weights, electrical means, hydraulic pressure or springs in conjunction with mechanical linkages.
