Abstract

1,114,347. Coated sheet material. TEXTILE RUBBER & CHEMICAL CO. Inc. 3 Feb., 1966 .[3 Feb., l965], No. 4779/66. Heading B2E. A method of preparing a gelled latex-coated fibrous laminate sheet material comprises applying a layer of a heat-gellable latex composition onto one surface of a steam-porous fibrous sheet material, and applying steam directly against the other surface of the latexcoated fibrous sheet material, the steam being under sufficient pressure to pass through the sheet material, in order to gel the latex composition. The latex composition may be in the form of a foam. A design may be embossed into the gelled foamed latex layer which may then be cured and dried. The latex composition may comprise an elastomeric latex e.g. a natural or synthetic elastomer such as butadiene-styrene which may be carboxylated, acrylonitrile-butadiene, acrylonitrilebutadiene-styrene, polybutadiene polyisoprene, chloroprene, butyl rubber, natural rubber, polyolefins, acrylates, and carboxylated BUNA rubber (TM); a gelling agent and a polymeric thickening agent, e.g. polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyvinyl . alcohol, and polyacrylates. The composition may be applied by knife, bar or roller coated. The fibrous sheet material may be a tufted carpet having a fibrous backing fabric, then foamed latex being applied to the non-tufted surface. As shown in Figure 2, the material 12 carrying latex layer 16 is passed over the open top of a steam box 22 constructed to direct steam upwardly into contact with the uncoated lower surface of the coated sheet material, e.g. the tufted face of a carpet or rug, the steam being under sufficient pressure to bow the coated sheet material slightly upwardly as it passes over the box. Radiant heat from heater panel 26 may be directed downwardly onto the coated surface of the latex-coated fibrous sheet material. The outer surface of the latex layer may be heated in a warm air oven or by directing steam onto it, whilst applying steam directly against the outer surface of the fibrous sheet material. A desired design e.g. grid design 32, 34, may be embossed into the gelled foamed latex layer by passage through a pair of embossing rolls 28, 30 and the coated sheet material then dried and cured. The fibrous sheet material may be a woven or nonwoven fabric of, for example, cotton, asbestos, rayon, and wool, glass fibre mats, mineral wool webs, canvas, and paper.
