Abstract

The invention relates to a non-anaphylactic a -phenoxymethylpenicillin or a non-toxic salt thereof, having removed therefrom the highly antigenic penicilloylated proteins and peptides of molecular weight over 1000 inherently present in the penicillin or non-toxic salt thereof when obtained by a fermentation process. The penicillin or a salt thereof is purified by subjecting the penicillin or salt either during or after manufacture to dialysis or gel filtration. During manufacture, refers to the purification of the 6-aminopenicillanic acid, produced by fermentation or obtained enzymatically from a penicillin produced by fermentation, which may be acylated to produce a -phenoxy-methylpenicillin or a salt thereof, e.g by treatment with a -phenoxyacetyl chloride. A therapeutic composition comprises a non-anaphylactic a -phenoxymethyl penicillin or a non-toxic salt thereof, and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, e.g. tablet or injection.
