Series printers; printing in books.-A printing machine for printing on successive pages of a book comprises means for turning pages of a book successively to bring each page from an initial position into a printing position where printing is effected and turning the pages from the printing position into a final position. Special holders.-As described, the machine is used for printing on cheque books, a customer's number in magnetic ink. The back of the book 5 is held by spring jaws (Fig. 7, not shown) from where it hangs down to its initial position on a platform (90) mounted on parallel links (91), (92) secured to an upright (86). The platform is urged away from the upright by a spring (98). Below the platform 90 are a pair of cam-operated arms 100, 108. Arm 100 carries a pad (106) which holds the top cheque firmly in the platform while the arm 108 has a pad 119 whose cam actuated movement causes it to buckle the top cheque outwardly. This provides room for the insertion of a pair of gripper arms 2, 3, which not only pivot about pivot 40 to grip a cheque, but which are pivotal on linkage (51, 52, Fig. 4, not shown) so that the grippers may slip into the buckle made in the book. There are six pairs of grippers 2, 3 mounted on a rotor 1 driven in step-by-step movements by a Geneva wheel 9 provided with six non-radial slots 10 which align the rotary positions. A linkage working in the slots effects advancing and smooth deceleration of the grippers by power from a motor-driven crank. The grippers operate by cams operating followers and linkage to move a page to printing position and then on to the final position. Front and side lays.-A corner tray (202, Fig. 14, not shown), is used to locate the cheque book while it is being gripped in the pageturning mechanism. Type-wheel machine; index setting.-The printing unit is mounted on a plate (139) for pivotal movement over the cheque and comprises a series of manually-settable type-wheels (230, Fig. 15, not shown) in meshing engagement with setting wheels (235) carried on a spindle (236) the cross-section of which is defined by two circular arcs each less than a semi-circle. Retainers (237) hold the setting wheels (235) against the spindle 236 in such a manner that adjacent setting wheels are off-set from one another to facilitate manipulation. A viewing frame 254 assists setting of type-wheels. Index-setting impression arrangements.-There is a hammer (240) in each printing position on a common spindle (241) and are operated by a quick spring action of a bail 249 on a bump on the hammer frame 240. Impression is effected by momentum. Hammer construction.-Each hammer supports a resileint member (242) of plastics material formed with a plurality of slots to provide a row of tongues (243) one of which rests on each of the hammers. The member (242) is retained in position by a gib (244) and the tongues can move and twist to accommodate slight inclinations of the type-faces. A sheet (245) of hard plastic material about 0À007 inch thickness is held above the resilient member (242) to prevent damage to the tongues (243) if a sheet of paper is absent. Numbering and counting.-The pages may be numbered and counted.
