Abstract

A bearing material includes polytetrafluoroethylene or polytetrafluoroethylene compound distributed in a matrix at least a minor proportion by volume of which polytetrafluoroethylene or compound has been recovered by being broken up into small particles after having been made fibrous by mechanical working. P.T.F.E. compound is P.T.F.E. containing particles, granules or fibres of fillers or reinforcement. The proportion of recovered P.T.F.E. to virgin P.T.F.E. may be about one part in three by volume, virgin P.T.F.E. being P.T.F.E. which has not been made fibrous by mechanical working. The fibres may be broken up by grinding ina mill. The grinding may be carried out in the presence of water. The P.T.F.E. compound may include lead or a lead compound. The P.T.F.E. or compound may be impregnated in a metal matrix, or may be in a plastics matrix which has polymerized around it.
