Abstract

1,113,796. Feeding webs. AUTO WRAPPERS (NORWICH) Ltd. 13 Sept., 1966 [26 Oct., 1965], No. 45236/65. Heading B6B. In apparatus wherein paper strip is fed stepby-step to a processing station such as a transverse cutter, the feed devices are operated by a driving member 7, Fig. 2, oscillated about a shaft 5 by a reciprocating driving member 14, Fig. 1, and the coupling between the members 7, 14 can be adjusted radially of the member 7 to vary the length of strip fed at each step for effecting registration of the strip relative to the operation of the cutter, such adjustment being controlled by means detecting marks on the strip. The strip is fed by rollers, the shaft of one of which has a gear-wheel 1 engaging a gearwheel 2 rotatable on a shaft 5 and coupled by a one-way ratchet device 3 to a member 4 rotatable on an extension 6 of the gear 2 and integral with the radially-extending driving member or arm 7. Slidable in a radial slot 8 in the arm 7 is a block 9 mounted on an extension 18 of a spigot 17 to which one end 16 of the driving member 14 is pivoted, the other end of the member 14 being adjustably connected to a driven crank-wheel 12. Another extension 25 of spigot 17 is secured in a radially-adjustable position to an arm 24 integral with a boss 22 which is rotatable on an eccentric 19. The eccentric 19 is rotatable on an extension 5a of shaft 5 and has a flange 21 with a stud 29, Fig. 1, thereon. A spring 30 connects the flange 21 and the arm 24 so that normally the stud 29 abuts the arm 24 and the parts 24, 21, 19 oscillate together about the shaft 5. A second stud 42 is mounted on the flange 21, and if a pivoted arm 40 is moved into the path of this stud, the eccentric 19 is prevented from rotating with the arm 24, thus causing radial movement of the arm and the spigot 17 and alteration of the step feed of the strip. The arm 40 is moved into blocking position by the energizing of an electromagnet 36. Registration marks on the strip are sensed and cause energizing of the magnet if a predetermined degree of out-of-register is sensed. Normally, the apparatus is set to slightly overfeed or under-feed the strip. In the former case, and as shown, the feed length is reduced by a correction, and in the latter case, the apparatus would have to be assembled with the eccentric 19 at 180‹ from the position shown. The flange 21 may have provision for mounting the stud 42 in either of a number of positions. Further, more than one stud 42 or alternatively a number of teeth may be provided on the flange 21, and the arm 40 operated to engage the stud 42 or tooth appropriate to the amount of misregistration to be corrected.
