1,113,667. Stretching; rolling; improving physical properties. COMPAGNIE DES ATELIERS ET FORGES DE LA LOIRE (St. Chamoid, Firminy, St. Etienne, Jacob-Holtzer). 25 June, 1965 [3 July, 1964], No. 27064/65. Headings B3E, B3M and B3V. Strip-tensioning apparatus comprises two sets of rollers arranged to have a strip pass in a sinuous path in friotional engagement with the roller surfaces of first one then the other set; positive drive means for rotating a roller in each set at accurately determinable different speeds so as to feed a strip past said first then past said second set while imposing a prescribed elongation to the strip as determined by the difference between said speeds; and means for rotating the remaining rollers of both sets by way of yielding connections whereby said remaining rollers will participate in feeding and tensioning the strip in a substantially slip-free manner. Strip is tensioned by passage in a sinuous path around rollers a 1 -a 5 and then around rollers b 1 -b 5 , being treated, e.g. rolled, alternately bent or otherwise worked, as it passes in stretched condition between the rollers a 5 and b 1 . The rollers are driven by a motor h through differential gearing i and gears d, e and f, and powder magnetic slip clutches m. The spider of the differential i is driven by a worm j so that the speeds of the rollers a relative to the speeds of the rollers b may be varied. The clutches m are set to disengage at a predetermined torque. The torque, on the shafts of the rollers a 5 and/or b 1 is measured and the resulting control signal varies the energizing currents of the slip couplings m. The gears driving rollers a 5 and b 1 may be of smaller and larger diameters, respectively, than the remaining gears of the rollers of their respective sets.
