Abstract

In a process for the catalytic reforming of hydrocarbon oil, the oil is passed in serial flow through n reactors (n being at least 3) until the catalyst activity in at least one of the last two reactors has declined appreciably, one of the last two reactors is then removed from service and regenerated while continuing serial hydrocarbon flow through the remaining n - 1 reactors, the regenerated reactor is returned to service in series flow, the second at the last two reactors is removed and regenerated while continuing serial hydrocarbon flow through the remaining n - 1 reactors and the regenerated second reactor is returned to service, the catalyst in the remaining n - 2 reactors being regenerated only during periods when no reactor is in service, the octane number of the reformate product obtained with n - 1 reactors in operation being lower than that obtained with n reactors in operation. In a preferred embodiment there are 4 reactors and the catalyst is distributed in the ratio 1:1:3:3.
