Abstract

A polymer having a carbon chain back-bone and repeating units of formula <FORM:1113527/C3/1> where Z is a divalent organic radical and A and B are each amino or carboxyl groups, the ratio of amino to carboxyl groups being 1.0 to 1.25-5.0 and in each recurring unit not more than one of A and B is an amino group. The polymer may be prepared by copolymerizing maleic anyhydride with a polymerizable olefine, e.g. ethylene, and then converting some or all of the anhydride groups to pairs of carboxyl and amino groups by treatment with sodium azide and decomposing, e.g. with water, the acid azide initially formed to form, e.g. a copolymer of ethylene b -aminoacrylic acid and ethylene nucleic acid.
