[Also in Divisions B3, B6 and G1] A coil storage and handling device includes means for supporting a coil of sheet material at an operating station, gripping means operatively connected to the supporting means for gripping the leading portion of the sheet material and holding same at a predetermined attitude, means for unwinding sheet material from the coil, means causing the gripping means to release said leading portion of the sheet material to permit unwinding of sheet material from the coil, and means for rewinding the coil after an operation on the end thereof so as to position the leading portion for a subsequent operation. A selected coil of sheet material, of a number of coils carried by an endless conveyer 12, is positioned at an unwinding station 46 by suitable movement of the conveyer. The conveyer includes links 22 carrying rollers at the link pivots running on upper and lower tracks 28, 30 and supporting the coils. The track 30 includes a pivoted section connected to weight indicating means to weigh a coil positioned thereon. The conveyer 12 is driven, in either direction, by notched wheels 36, 38. A leading side edge of the sheet of each coil is held by a gripper 48 on a pair of arms 56 welded to the conveyer links 22. The gripper 48 is opened and is closed by lever means 62, 64 rocked by lever means 90 in turn rocked by a cam 94 on a shaft 96, journalled in the machine framework at the discharge station and rocked by piston and cylinder means. Rocking of the shaft 96 causes through link means a frame 14 carrying pinch rollers 15 to approach the end of the sheet held by the gripper 48, causes through link and cam means, Figs. 4, 13, 14 (not shown), the rollers 15 to close on to the sheet end, and releases the gripper 48 from the sheet and a latch 82 from a notch 84 in the reel end plate 86 to permit rotation of the reel. A tyre driven from a motor is also moved into contact with the side end plate 86 to act as a brake thereon when the rollers 15 are driven. After the required length of sheet has been unwound and cut off the remaining sheet is rewound on to the coil by reversing the drive to the rollers 15 and driving the reel side end plate 86 by the tyre. The leading portion of the sheet is then again held by the gripper 48. The reel 13 may have a radially adjustable hub, Fig. 11 (not shown), and end plates of the reel may be adjustable to accommodate coils of different widths. A control panel may include, Fig. 10 (not shown), indicating means comprising a belt of chain links carrying discs corresponding to the various reels and beaming information as to the material, weight and gauge of the relevant coil. Paper 130 from a reel 124 carried by the arm 56 may be fed through the rollers 15 with the sheet to provide interleaving between the lengths of cut-off material.
