A method of removing tree stumps from the ground comprises cutting the stump substantially vertically downwardly along at least one line of reference, cutting the earth, and thus the roots around the stump, attaching a rope, chain or the like successively to each cut section and drawing the sections from the ground in succession. In apparatus for carrying out the method, a bar 10, Fig. 2, at one end, is adapted to be attached to the three point linkage of a tractor, and, at the other end, carries a saw 13 mounted in slides 15 on the member 10 and connected to an arm 16 joined to a crank 16a adapted to be rotated by the power take-off of the tractor. In another embodiment, the saw 21, Fig. 3, is in the form of a segment which is rocked about a pivot 22 on the member 10 by a linkage 23, 24 driven by the power take-off of the tractor.
