Abstract

Combustible gases made by the gasification of solid fuels under pressure are subjected to a two-stage process. The gases are supplied with a gasification agent in the absence of a catalyst to oxidize solid and liquid constituents in the gases to form further gas, and water is then added to the gas mixture to cool it, suppress soot, and to provide steam for subsequent catalytic conversion.
