Abstract
A case and a sheath having higher and lower indices of refraction respectively have a third component of black borosilicate glass containing 2-10% wt. Fe2O3 and 2-10% wt. TiO2 to a combined total of 4-15%. Less than 5% of alkaline earths and substantially no divalent transition metal oxides should be present. The third component may surround the cladding or alternatively may be arranged along the axis of symmetry of a split core, the core portions being separated by additional sheath glass.
