Abstract
An emulsion, for example of water in petroleum oil, is broken by adding thereto a small quantity of a reaction product of a diisocyanate with (a) a mixture of a water-soluble and a water-insoluble polyalkylene glycol, or (b) an addition product of ethylene oxide and a water-insoluble polyalkylene glycol, or (c) a product formed by the simultaneous addition of monomeric ethylene oxide and higher monomeric alkylene oxides to water or glycols. Examples are given of reacting hexamethylene di-isocyanate with a mixture of polyethylene and polypropylene glycols, reacting toluylene di-isocyanate with a mixture of polyethylene and polypropylene glycols, reacting toluylene di-isocyanate with a polypropylene glycol-ethylene oxide adduct, reacting hexamethylene di-isocyanate with a tetrahydrofurane-ethylene oxide adduct, and reacting toluylene di-isocyanate with a copolymer of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide; these products satisfactorily broke naturally-occurring petroleum emulsions. From 5 to 40 ppm of the substance may be added to the emulsion, which may also be heated, stirred and/or subjected to an electric field.ALSO:An emulsion, for example of water in petroleum oil, is broken by adding thereto a small quantity of a reaction product of a diisocyanate with (a) a mixture of a water-soluble and a water-insoluble polyalkylene glycol, or (b) an addition product of ethylene oxide and a water-insoluble polyalkylene glycol, or (c) a product formed by the simultaneous addition of monomeric ethylene oxide and higher monomeric alkylene oxides to water or glycols. Examples are given of reacting hexamethylene di-isocyanate with a mixture of polyethylene and polypropylene glycols, reacting toluylene di-isocyanate with a mixture of polyethylene and polypropylene glycols, reacting toluylene di-isocyanate with a polypropylene glycol - ethylene oxide adduct. reacting hexamethylene di-isocyanate with a tetrahydrofurane-ethylene oxide adduct, and reacting toluylene di-isocyanate with a copolymer of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide; these products satisfactorily broke naturallyoccurring petroleum emulsions. From 5 to 40 p.p.m. of the substance may be added to the emulsion, which may also be heated, stirred and/or subjected to an electric field.
