Abstract
<PICT:1112782/C6-C7/1> In a method of electro-phoretically coating a metallic article having an open-ended compartment whilst moving the article connected to one pole of a D.C. power source through a bath of coating material, a nozzle-like electrode is located within the compartment and discharges coating material into said compartment, the nozzle being maintained at a potential different from that of the article and thereby forming a secondary electrode such that a film of coating material is deposited within the compartment. The embodiment shown comprises a tank 111 containing a bath of coating material 112 the tank forming the primary counter-electrode of the system. The article 121 is passed through the bath upon a wooden sled 122 suspended from the conveyer 123 and is connected to a source of potential via brush 129 bus-bar 119 and leads 125, 117. Within the cavity 147 is positioned a nozzle-electrode 145 which forms a secondary counter-electrode and which is connected to a source of coating material via conduits 143, 133 and 131 and to a source of electrical potential via conduit 133, brush 137 bus-bar 139 and leads 135, 141. The nozzle electrode may be of tapering form having a single outlet Fig.4 (not shown), of constant internal diameter and having a plurality of orifices in the wall thereof Fig.6 (not shown) or be a combination thereof. The coating liquid passed therethrough need not be identical in composition to that within the bath, and the potential of the nozzle need not be equal to that of the primary counter-electrode.
